the change in the proportions of income sources, there was also an increase in the overall level of incomes as urban workers sought to increase their share of national output and to keep pace with rising prices and rising rural incomes. The World Bank notes that "wages had been rising at low to moderate rates between 1978 and 1983, averaging just over 6 per cent p.a. with the fastest increase being at the very start of the reform movement in 1979/80" (1990a: p. 57). However, after 1983 nominal wages rose rapidly. See Table 5.4.
